Golden Milk Bliss™ Recipe with Saffron to Help Rest and Restore
Just the smell of golden milk brewing invites us to put our work aside, slow down, and tune into the tranquility of the moment.
Newer to the American wellness scene, golden milk dates back thousands of years as a nighttime restorative tonic with many beneficial properties for the mind and body*. In Ayurveda — a 5,000-year-old traditional wellness system from India — golden milk is revered for its intelligent blend of Turmeric, Ginger, Black Pepper, ghee, and milk, among other herbs, to soothe digestion and support well-being as a restorative nightcap.
Here, we dive into the traditional Ayurvedic golden milk recipe with the unique addition of saffron to help you feel deeply nourished, restored, and resilient when facing life's occasional stressors.*
Building Ojas: Stability, Immunity, and Vitality
To truly understand golden milk's deeply nourishing benefits, we must first understand the term: ojas.
Golden milk tastes delicious and helps build ojas, an Ayurvedic term that represents the most refined aspect of digestion that resides in the heart. Ojas provides the essence that supports overall health, vitality, and rejuvenation.
Our immune and digestive systems act somewhat as a team, so healthy digestion is a significant indicator of our vitality and aliveness. “Optimized digestion supports the sustenance of ojas in our body,” says Ric Scalzo, founder of Kokora.
When we eat food grown and cared for properly, we take in that vitality through our digestive system, which supports overall health and well-being. The energy behind this health and well-being is what we know as ojas.
"We're living in a very synthesized world, and the concept of producing ojas is so far from that. Environmental exposures are taking life away from us, and here, we're talking about ojas as a way to help us build life back up," says Ric.
The combination of regeneratively grown Turmeric, Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, and Ginger in the following golden milk latte recipe contributes to building ojas in our body. This helps us gently relax, restore, and rejuvenate our entire nervous system*.
Boosting the Blissful Benefits
Want to make your golden milk even more beneficial? Add Saffron.
“Adding a few sprigs of Saffron adds a beneficial component that helps to clear blood chi stagnation,” says Ric. “When you’re supporting your vital force, you want to make sure stagnation is moving – this will help clear dampness, stagnation, and feelings of discomfort*.” In our Golden Milk Bliss™ blend, we also added Vanilla and Cardamom to get an earthier, richer flavor.
Turmeric: Nature’s Regenerator
Many know that Turmeric, the beloved sparkling golden herb, helps the body manage inflammation and occasional physical discomfort, but many don’t know it’s also a source of regeneration.
Derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, Turmeric has long been used in many Indian dishes and as a natural food dye. Today, it’s widely known for its soothing qualities for the body, mind, joints, and digestive system*.
“Taking Turmeric every day is a well-supported concept to regenerate our life,” says Ric.
To support the benefits of Turmeric in Golden Milk, it is always beneficial to use a fat such as ghee when preparing your golden milk beverage.
